What to do in Facinas?

Facinas, with an altitude of  130 meters, is a small village of about 2,000 inhabitants in the municipality of Tarifa, province of Cádiz.

It's nestled at the foot of Monte Fate (Sierra de Fates), on the edge of Los Alcornocales Natural Park.

It offers fairly close and easy access to the coast, about 8‑15 km from beaches such as Bolonia, Valdevaqueros, Punta Paloma and Zahara de los Atunes. Just 15 minutes from the town of Tarifa.

Things to See & Do
Facinas isn’t famous for big tourist monuments, but its charm is in nature, rural life, and the proximity to both mountains and the sea. Here are some highlights:

🥛 Refreshments

Food Stores
In Facinas there are several food stores (La Mariquita, Casa Camacho, Mercado de Abastos). The nearest supermarkets are in Tarifa (Mercadona, Dia, Lidl, Supeco, El Jamón).

Bars and Restaurants
La Esquinita offers takeaway food and there are three bars (Perea, La Fonda, Lo de Antoñín). Restaurants: Venta del Nene, and in summer only Jairo's opens with pizzas and burgers. For tapas in Tarifa, Calle Guzmán El Bueno is full of bars. For good fish in Tarifa: El Ancla, and Explora with good pizzas and meat

🌿 Nature & landscapes

Trekking or walking in Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Lots of flora/fauna, bird watching, forests of cork oak, scenic hills. 

The Embalse Almodóvar (a reservoir) nearby is a beautiful hidden spot. 

Beaches like Bolonia, Valdevaqueros are close enough for day trips. Great for sun, surf, relaxing. 

Cultural / local life & festivities
La Romería de San Isidro Labrador (last Sunday in May) is a local pilgrimage/festival with horse carriages, music, tradition. 

Feria de Facinas in honour of La Divina Pastora (mid‑August) is their big summer fair. 

Local traditions, local food 
Rurral cuisine, game (venison, wild boar), retinto beef, etc. 

Historic / pre‑historic interest
There are megalithic remains (dolmens) in the nearby Sierra de Saladaviciosa. Also ruins of the Roman city Baelo Claudia near Bolonia are a must if you like archaeology.

Even though it’s small, it has essential services: health centre, pharmacy, shops, bakery, municipal pool. 

Tips for Visiting
Best time to goSpring (April‑May) or autumn when the weather is pleasant, fewer crowds, nature is especially beautiful. Summer is hotter but lively due to local festivals.

Transportation
If possible, having a car gives you more flexibility, especially to visit nearby beaches, parks, and archaeological sites. Public transport exists but is less frequent in rural zones.

What to bring / wear:
Good walking shoes for trails. Layers / sun protection (hat, sunscreen, light clothing). Evenings may cool down. If you visit in summer, prepare for heat, especially inland.

Food & restaurants
There are several restaurants and a takeaway place in Facinas. Venta El Nene specializes in retinto beef. La Fonda offers breakfast and typical local dishes such as venison in sauce, pork loin in fat, bluefin tuna (almadraba), and tapas of chicharrones and cured meats, as well as a very tasty daily menu. Lo de Antoñín offers a variety of tapas and burgers. Bar Perea serves breakfast and coffee, and also has a tobacco shop.
The local artisan cheeses are also highly recommended.

Respect local schedule
In small pueblos, sometimes things close during siesta; restaurants may open late for dinner.

Festivities
If your trip coincides with a local festival (Feria, Romería), it's a great opportunity to see local culture, food, music. On those days things may be busier / services more limited (shops closed etc.).

Nature & outdoors
Bring insect repellent if venturing into wooded areas or hiking. Also water, as shade can be limited.
